Born on 1 June 1956 in Moscow

1978: graduated from Lomonosov Moscow State University with a degree in mathematical economics
1991: received an advanced degree from Harvard University, where he studied currency, tax and customs law
1978-1980: worked at the R&D Centre for Systemic Research, under the Soviet Academy of Sciences
1980-1991: worked at the Main Currency and Economy Directorate of the Ministry of Finance of the Soviet Union
1986-1989: served as the representative of the Baumansky District, Moscow, in the Council of the People's Deputies
1991-1993: Vice President of Avtotraktorexport
1994-2004: member of the First, Second, Third and Fourth State Dumas; Deputy Head/Head of the Duma Committee for Budget Issues and Taxes; First Deputy Speaker of the Fourth Duma
9 March 2004: appointed Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation
4 December 2011: elected member of the Sixth State Duma
21 December 2011: elected First Deputy Chairman of the State Duma of Russia
From 20 May 2010: President of the Russian Olympic Committee (reelected for the next term on 29 May 2014).
