In the past, sports organisations such as National Olympic Committees and International and National Federations did not need complex marketing and communication programmes. In the modern world, where the multiple forms of communication that we all use on a daily basis have become so influential, particularly social media, sports organisations face difficult and important decisions regarding who to partner with, determining and influencing their target audiences and creating a distinctive brand. Creating the communication structure within the context of a clear brand is becoming increasingly important for organisations looking to enlarge their audience and increase loyalty.

In November 2011, the Russian International Olympic University launched the first international education programme "Brand Building and Communications in Sport" for sports managers seeking to raise the profile of their organisations. The two-week course was run as a series of interactive classes using new, up-to-date educational methods. The course was run by Jon Tibbs, one of the most well-regarded experts in the sports sector.

A number of leading experts from around the world lectured on the course: René Fasel (IOC member and IIHF President) presented a case study about building the Ice Hockey World Championships brand; BBC broadcaster David Eades, and sports journalist and member of the IOC Press Commission Alan Abrahamson lectured on effective information strategies and cooperating with the media. Head of the Ukraine NOC, IOC member, and outstanding athlete Sergey Bubka, and EOC President Patrick Hickey also delivered lectures.

The first week of the course was devoted to brand building and communications for sports organisations. The second week featured a number of practical exercises including developing communication strategies, crisis management, training the media, social networks and the use of technology. The course used a number of case studies as learning exercises leading to lively debates and discussions.

Participants for RIOU's "Brand Building and Communications in Sport" course came from 10 countries including the USA, Great Britain, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Hungary, Armenia, Jordan, South Korea, Serbia and Ukraine.

Marketing and communications are of vital importance to sports organisations looking to promote themselves in the global marketplace; this well-received course was an important milestone in the foundation of RIOU and, going forward, will influence plans and programmes at the University.
