Born on 16 November 1971 in Sverdlovsk
From1991: member of the Russian national team
1992: Honoured Master of Sports (swimming, freestyle)
1992: Olympic champion in 50m and 100m freestyle
1992: silver medallist in 4x100m freestyle relay and combined 4x100m relay
1994: graduated from the Volgograd State Academy of Physical Culture
1994: winner of the Good Will Games
1996: Olympic champion in 50m and 100m freestyle
1996: silver medallist in 4x100m freestyle relay and combined 4x100m
1996: nominated as the best Russian athlete of 1996
1996: awarded the International Amateur Swimming Federation (FINA) prize for outstanding achievements in swimming
1996: awarded the Order of Service to the Fatherland (2nd class)
1998: winner of the Good Will Games
2000: silver medallist in 100m freestyle
2001: wrote his autobiography "True Swimming", supported by a "L'Equipe" journalist
