An active sporting environment is an integral part of life at the Russian International Olympic University (RIOU). Building on its 'Gold' status as a FISU Healthy Campus, RIOU consistently expands opportunities for sport and exercise, making them accessible to students from different countries. A vivid example of this was the participation of RIOU students in the All-Russian orienteering competition 'Russian Azimuth'.

This large-scale event, held since 2006 with the support of the Ministry of Sport of the Russian Federation and the Orienteering Federation, brought together more than 900 participants in Sochi's Riviera Park. The competition covered nine age categories – from the youngest athletes of six years old to seasoned veterans – with winners in each group receiving medals and diplomas from the ministry.

RIOU’s involvement made the Sochi stage of the Russian Azimuth the most internationally diverse yet this season. Taking to the start line alongside Russian athletes were RIOU students from Gambia, India, Zambia, Zimbabwe, China, Pakistan and Uganda. The range of nationalities once again confirmed that sport serves as a universal language, bringing people together regardless of their background.

Particularly impressive was the performance of RIOU student George Khumukcham from India, who won a bronze medal. This award is not only a personal achievement for the athlete but also evidence of the university's consistent work to create an environment for active lifestyles and physical development – one in which every student can realise their potential.
