Professor Girginov research interests and publications span sports development, comparative management, policy analysis, and the Olympic movement. Professor Girginov currently holds three visiting professorships at Stellenbosch University, South Africa, the Capital University of Physical Education and Sports, Beijing, China and the Russian International Olympic University. He also serves as General Editor of the Routledge Encyclopedia of Sport Studies and was formerly the president of the European Association for Sport Management (EASM). Professor Girginov has successfully delivered multiple research projects worth over $US 2 million, commissioned by Sport England, the World Bank, WADA, the IOC, ERASMUS+, the Qatar National Research Foundation, and other agencies. Vassil's latest books, Management of Sports Development (Routledge) and Handbook of Sport & Culture (Edward Elgar), were published in 2026.

Areas of competence:

Girginov's most recent projects include ‘Mega Sporting Events and Social Development' (funded by the Qatar National Research Fund) and ‘Sustainable Sport Management', funded by the European Council ERASMUS+ programme.

Areas of Expertise: 

Specializes in the field of sports development including Olympic movement, comparative management and policy analysis. He has worked with and been consulted by sport organizations in Bulgaria, Canada and England as well as the Trim and Fitness International Sport for All Association. Girginov's most recent projects include ‘Intangible Olympic legacy: Concept and Measurement' (IOC-funded) and ‘Do anti-doping interventions work? (WADA-funded).

Professional Experience:

·         Previously worked as advisor to the Chairman of the Bulgarian Sports Union, on the Sofia bids for the Winter Olympic Games and in higher education institutions in Bulgaria and Canada.

·         He has been researching the sports development legacy of the 2012 London Olympic Games.

·         Executive Editor of the 2012 Routledge Special Olympic Journals Issue.
