The Shaiba Ice Arena in Sochi, which houses the All-Russia Children’s Sport and Fitness Centre, recently hosted a masterclass by Ma Changyu, an 11-time champion of China in short track speed skating and currently a student at the Russian International Olympic University. The Chinese skater gave valuable advice and expert coaching to young athletes from Saint Petersburg, Samara and Sochi.

The potential employers included the authorities of the Krasnodar region and the city of Sochi, the Accor international hotel group, the F1 Russian Grand Prix promoter, and Jet Set Sports (official hospitality provider at the Olympic Games and other sporting mega-events), amongst others.

The visit of two leaders of the International Bobsleigh & Skeleton Federation – President Ivo Ferriani and Sports Director Normunds Kotans – took place on 13 February as part of the programme of stay in Sochi for the World Cup in these two disciplines.

For Ivan Belyaev, a graduate of RIOU’s first intake, the year of 2014 was marked by a number of events that could be fairly called life-changing. He successfully completed the Master of Sport Administration course, undertook internship at the Sochi Olympics, and a few months later joined PwC. Ivan is currently a leader of an informal RIOU alumni club, and he shared his experiences in an interview with us.

The programme aims to provide opportunities for promising candidates to receive training in sports administration, develop skills in managing sporting organisations and venues, and acquire theoretical as well as practical expertise in running high profile international competitions.
